3rd Grade has been studying shelters alongside their 3rd grade building project. On Tuesday, to conclude the studies, students picked a shelter of their choice and presented a diorama to the class. The students were very proud to show off their hard work!
This past week the 4th graders presented their animal reports. Each was assigned an animal to research, write a paper about and present on. They also made dioramas of their animal in its natural habitat.
Our vibrant and unmistakable bus was seen cruising down Broadway just days before the Belmont Stakes!
Don't forget, if you see the bus to post on social media using the hashtag #waldorfonthemove to be entered into a drawing to win a prize!
E pluribus Unum: Out of Many, One
June is Immigrant Heritage Month, and grades 5, 6, and 7 collaboratively created a large-scape portrait of our school community's particular mix of immigrant heritage for our DEI wall. All students, faculty and staff are invited to craft a flag from the countries their ancestors came from and add it to our growing collection. The more people that participate, the more accurately our "group portrait" will represent us!
The project has provided a fruitful opportunity to ask parents about where their parents or grandparents emigrated from and there have been many delightful discoveries as we get to know each other better. Some of our families have been here for many generations, and others have stories from living relatives about emigrating from Europe, Asia, South America, and Canada.
We also are learning about national flags. Are there any you see that you don't recognize? It's amazing to think that our families came from all over the world to become Americans.
An Olympic-Sized Thank You
On Thursday and Friday, May 23-24, over 100 students from 8 Waldorf schools in the northeast gathered at our beloved school to participate in the annual Greek Olympics. A compliment to the students’ main lesson study of Greek history, the Greek Games feature five of the traditional Olympic events: sprints, wrestling, long jump, discus and javelin. Athletes prepare for many weeks and then, at the Pentathlon, demonstrate their skills alongside new friends whom they have been paired-up with in one of five City States (Athens, Marathon, Corinth, Thebes, Sparta). At the conclusion of the two-day event, athletes have competed to the best of their ability, made new friends, and created plentiful memories. They are each acknowledged for their achievements with a handmade Olympic medal, commemorating that year’s event.

The 7th grade class shared their play of "3 Tales from Around the World" with peers and parents this May. As part of their main lesson on the Age of Exploration, they learned about the indigenous people the explorers first encountered. The story goes that the crew of Magellan collected these tales and though Magellan did not make his way back home, his crew returned with social stories from indigenous cultures along their route.
