Class five learned how the Greeks painted figures onto pottery in two ways: with figures of black on red clay, or the opposite, with the background painted black and the figure remaining terracotta. Students used scratch-art paper and made images of two goddesses: Athena, as a black figure on a metallic shield, and Iris, the goddess of the rainbow, as a colorful figure on a black background.
In honor of Black History Month, in February grades 5, 6, and 7 individually studied the story of Katherine Johnson - NASA mathematician instrumental in successfully launching the first US astronaut, John Glenn, into orbit around the earth. At the end of the month, the three classes joined together under the artistic guidance of Kate Patterson to create a mural based on the beautiful artwork of Raul Colón from the children’s book about Katherine called Counting the Stars by Lesa Clime-Ransome. It is currently displayed along the stair well next to the front office in the lower school building.
Our 2024 Summer Enrichment Program is filling up fast and we have also added a middle school program!
Our students earned pride of place at the Annual Student Art Exhibition at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, as the curator chose to display the Pegasus drawings made by class 5 prominently in the center of the gallery. We're so glad to see the fruits of the unique Waldorf education shared with the public. The show is currently on display through the end of the month, and there will be a closing reception at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 30th. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free for participating students and their families.
Thank you to everyone who has been able to donate so far! We appreciate you all and know that your gifts will be graciously received by both non-profits.
