March 24th, 2024

This is a preview of our bulletin for the week of March 24th, 2024

With spring on the horizon, Class five painted Persephone picking spring blooms and studied the structure of the daffodil bulb and flower. In northern New York, spring comes but slowly, but until our gardens put forth their blooms, we can enjoy the colors of these glowing watercolor paintings.

When I read the note on this month's bulletin board, I walked up to our 1st grade classroom and asked Miss Gibbs if I could step in for a moment. The students were excited and more than willing to tell me all about the Iroquois legend of Chief Woksis and how the maple sap he'd collected was accidentally boiled down, leading to the discovery of maple syrup - a treat so many of us enjoy today.

During Farm Block and in preparation of their upcoming field trip to Hawthorn Valley Farm, 3rd and 4th grade students drew colorful animals typically found in the countryside.

Middle school students learned how to weave Saint Brigid's cross for Saint Patrick's Day. St. Brigid is the Patroness of Ireland and her cross is traditionally woven on the eve of the first day of the Celtic spring, February 1st. Students wove their crosses on the eve of the first day of our North American spring, and hopefully they will bring us the luck of the Irish!

The 7th graders have been using cabbage water to indicate whether something is an acid and base in their chemistry block. These combinations have led to a colorful range from pink and red acids to green and yellow bases with blue and purple taking the more neutral positions.

Our 2023-24 Annual Fund Campaign: Rooted in Waldorf is off to a great start - with the help of our generous donors we have raised $23,298 as of March 22nd. We have secured a donor who will match up to $20,000 from March 14th - 29th! Your support allows us to enrich and grow the academic, music, and art programs that help our students do remarkable things.

Please consider a gift to our Annual Fund today. Click the link below to donate, or text Waldorf to 44321. Checks can be made out to the Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs and either mailed to 62 York Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866, Attn: Annual Fund or they can be brought into our main office at 62 York Ave.

This week the 4th graders wrote poems about sneaky animals that can be found in the hayloft of the barn.
For inspiration, Miss Ward drew this adorable barn scene.

Poems Written by Grade 4

Pests in the Barn

Pests in the barn, they hide away,

In the barn the fox is sneaky,

In the barn the mouse is cheeky,

In the barn the possums are hanging,

In the barn the skunks are playing,

But watch out!

The cats hunt the prey…

-Violette

In the night when you are dreaming,

Many a pest is a’ scheming,

They plot to steal your eggs and grain

In the dark where eggs are lain

But look out, the barn cat is about…

- Ian

In the night when you are adrift

There are sneaky stealers about.

Stolen eggs and scattered grain,

In the barn they nimbly play.

-Hudsyn

In the dark barn while you rest,

There are many sneaky pests.

They’re here to steal your precious eggs,

They Scamper on their nimble legs.

-Eva

The Forest Kindergarten graciously invited the Lower School to celebrate the harvesting of Maple Syrup with them by hosting a Pancake Day! Some care giver volunteers from the lower school volunteered to help cook pancakes! We walked through the Forest with one of the kindergarten classes upon arrival and listened to a sweet story around the fire before we ate at the picnic tables with our buddy classes. It was so much fun!

the beauty that surrounds us clear,
the gentle breeze, the chirping bird,
the rustling leaves, our spirits stirred."
