May 12th, 2024

This is a preview of our bulletin for the week of May 12th, 2024

May Day was busy over at the Forest.

It was a beautiful day to celebrate outside, with children and parents joining in on the fun.

And, here at the Lower School, everyone had a great time making crowns, singing and dancing around the May Pole.

As part of our studies of the Age of Exploration, the 7th grade traveled to the Finger Lakes to explore the history of Auburn NY, and the geology of the Chimney Bluffs on Lake Ontario.

Grades six and seven worked collaboratively to create this large-scale depiction of the Great Wall of China. It took several days to work on their individual panels and then integrate them into the whole, unified image. In their main lesson, grade six is learning about the Silk Road and how it connected Europe to Asia, and grade seven is learning about the Age of Exploration, which was in part sparked by Marco Polo's journey to China. In addition, May is Asian-American Heritage Month, which ties in so neatly with the regular curriculum.

Over at the Forest Kindergarten children enjoy the sun (and mud) while playing outdoors.

In World Language class, 6th grade students learned all about Guacamole and where it originated - then spent time making their own!

In 3rd grade Language Arts class, students learned about basket weaving, or Cestería. It's an ancient Egyptian practice adopted by many indigenous cultures around the world. The Oaxaca, Chiapal, and Veracruz people of Mexico still practice these handcraft traditions.

Class six worked collaboratively to create a star map of the night sky as it would be seen on Friday, April 26th at 9pm. That was the night they went star-gazing in the peaceful yard of the Forest Kindergarten under the guidance of Mr. Hahn. He pointed out not only the star Polaris, and constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor and Cassiopeia, but also Leo, Gemini, and the stars Castor and Pollux. It was quite exciting to watch the sky slowly darken and the stars peep out one by one, and no doubt the evening sparked a sense of curiosity and adventure in the students.

This year's Whirligig Club is nearly over and it looks like the students have had a lot of fun making them out in the wood shop with Mr. Whitney.

Longtime friend of WSSS Mary Crain and grandson Noah (6th grade) were enjoying a snack at Uncommon Grounds in Albany when Noah noticed the artwork on the walls looked familiar. He saw a painting signed Opi and pointed it out to Mary, who took this picture. It’s great to see our school’s artwork when we are out and about, and though the Albany show is over, our student work will be displayed again at Uncommon Grounds
in Clifton Park from June 2-30.
